Agency Updates

NOAA Fisheries (Eli Holmes) Working with our national IT to get our ducks in a row for using GitHub Enterprise Cloud. Plan is for expanded use as a development platform for our scientific data science staff and teams. NOAA Fisheries Openscapes fall cohorts ended on Dec 2. Big focus this fall on “automation” https://nmfs-openscapes.github.io/ 160 staff across all our science centers https://nmfs-openscapes.github.io/. Blog post from one of the participants: https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/science-blog/sound-bytes-championing-open-science The template repos we created for participants were super successful: https://github.com/orgs/nmfs-opensci/repositories?q=&type=template&language=&sort= Next up: presentations to our local and national leadership on results from the fall training. Next our Stock Assessment National group organized an 11-week training with Posit Connect starting Dec 13. Our NMFS R UG ran a session on GitHub Codespaces for spinning up development containers (R, Python, C++). We submitted a 3-year proposal for agency level data-science (R/Python) training with Openscapes team training + “BLS-style” cohorts that go through a Coursera/Udemy/etc data-science course together with mentor/mentors

BLS (Brandon Kopp, Peter Meyer) Data Science Training Program Round 3 will start in January or February Our internal Posit Teams instance will launch in the same time period Still planning on code carpentry style internal seminars on things like building environments, documentation, unit testing, exception handling, etc. These will start in 2023 along with the launch of Posit Teams.

FDA (Steve Condrey) Nothing new

Census Bureau (Jessica Klein, Chuck Coleman) Our Integrated Research Environment (basically a Research Data Center but in homes) is scheduled to get upgraded in December, this will include a new version of R and access to some tidy packages. (Bruce Webster)

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) (Emily Mitchell): No updates

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)/Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) (Toyin) There are no updates this month.

EPA (Jeff Hollister) Jeff Hollister covering for EPA Still rolling with GitHub Enterprise (Agency wide), RStudio Connect pilot still ongoing. Planning for next agency wide R Meeting, sometime in 2023. Openscapes Cohorts to start in February within one Center. Still accepting applications from interested teams.

EIA (Stephen York): Proceeding with R setting up R Studio Server. First pilot project will use the R server in conjunction with our internal Tableau Server (via the RServe package). If pilot goes well and there is additional demand, will explore larger, enterprise solutions, such as Posit Connect, Posit Package Manager, etc.
